This document is a report about the status of Apple OS X Operating System at August 2002 (currently under revision). Compared with the original version under review (10.1.4), version 10.2.3 is a major improvement - especially in the area of Directory Services. Although 10.2.3 does support hosted LDAP Directory Services, the Password Server database is not distributed - so this still provides a single point of failure. The remaining reliance on Netinfo makes OS X Server somewhat questionable. As of January 2003, we are re-evaluting OS X Server 10.2.3. in light of new features in 10.2.n This document is in the process of being updated to reflect those changes. The report is based on use of Apple OS X Xserve server solution. NB: XServe is very noisy - If you have to work with XServe, make sure you don't have to work close by! The future direction of access to Internet related education resources is discussed and measured against the benchmark of the Government Schools system. All support documents are available (restricted access - please ask for access details). |
